Allocation Drift Review Card-sort 2.75 / 3 Tier 2→3 · RM

A drift nudge that flags when a portfolio's allocation has wandered from its target — shown with a gauge, not a number. Explaining the drift is educational, but rebalancing is a securities decision (Tier 3), so it routes to the advisor. If the client has no RM, it down-converts to an advisor booking + education — never silent.

User Flow

The drift is measured from the client's own holdings and surfaces calmly in-app with a visual. The investor reviews how far the mix has wandered, then the path forks on whether they have an advisor — rebalancing is a Tier-3 securities decision, so both routes lead to a human.

What allocation drift is

Allocation drift is when market moves push your mix away from its target. A rally lifts your winners fastest, so their share grows — and your portfolio's risk quietly climbs without you doing anything.

How drift creeps up if left alone

In a rising market a 60% equity plan can drift toward 80% — taking on risk you never chose.

By the time a downturn arrives, the drifted portfolio is at its riskiest — so the fall hits hardest exactly when you can least afford it.

Why it matters over the long run

  • Risk rises on autopilot. You don't have to trade for your equity weight to grow — a rising market does it for you.
  • It peaks at the worst moment. Drift is largest after a long rally — right before the downturns it makes more painful.
  • Rebalancing is built-in discipline. Trimming what's run up and topping up what's lagged is a structured "sell high, buy low."

The point of rebalancing

It isn't about predicting the market — it's about keeping your portfolio the one you actually chose, so its risk stays matched to your plan.

Why you're seeing this

What triggered it

Your equity allocation drifted more than 15% above its target weight.

What it used

Only your own holdings and the target allocation you set — nothing is shared outside the app.

How it's created

Our AI selects from a pre-approved library of nudges. It surfaces the factual gap but never gives investment advice — that's for a licensed advisor. Every nudge is logged.

Why it routes to an advisor

Rebalancing involves securities decisions, which require a licensed advisor — so this nudge hands off to a human rather than acting in-app.

Habit Building

Allocation drift is gradual and invisible day-to-day. The habit this builds is periodic awareness — trusting the app to catch drift early and loop in a human for the actual rebalance, rather than nagging or auto-trading.

First review
Sees the drift clearly
A gauge — not a jargon number — shows the mix has wandered above plan: a drift that's otherwise invisible between statements.
Trust: made it visible
Hand-off
Routed to a human
The app doesn't pretend to advise. It connects the investor to their advisor (or books a call), which signals it knows its limits.
Trust: knows its limits
Aftermath
No nagging
It only returns if the drift persists. The investor learns that when this nudge fires, it genuinely matters.
Habit: signal, not noise
Over time
Drift-aware partnership
The investor comes to treat the app as an honest early-warning system that loops in the right people — not a robo-advisor pushing trades.
Habit: trusted watchdog
The guardrail that protects the habit: a Tier-3 nudge never gives securities advice in-app — it shows the factual drift with a visual and hands off to a licensed advisor (or down-converts to a booking + education for self-directed clients). It re-fires only if the drift persists, under the global 2–5 per week cap.
